“The Hemphill Gallery transforms the third floor of an old car dealership into an elegant space where a person can open themselvesn to art. Hemphill required a timeless design that would provide privacy without isolation, a depature from the fashionable wide-open, pointed-brick warehouse-type galleries. As the representative of a variety of artists, the gallery had to be manipulatable viewing environment, designed to permit the presentation of both intimate and larger works and facilitate the spatial versatility to meet a variety of gallery requirements. The program consisted of one main gallery, two smaller galleries, a small prints and video gallery, a private showroom, offices, and art handling space. Beyond the task of simply erecting walls to hang art, the new gallery had to quietly mediate between the rough concrete shell and the very refined objects on display. So rather than covering the existing coffered-ceiling and heavy beams, the concrete structure was rethought as a topography which informed the placement of walls.” – Hemphill Gallery designed by David Jameson Architects Inc.
